Paraguay

Craft industry, Folklore and Gastronomy

The craft industry of Paraguay is rich in its variety

One of the most famous achievements is the Ñanduti, part of étoffre embroidered and decorated with very sharp colors, carried out according to the principle of spider fabric (ñanduti means cobweb in Guarani).

Embroideries, ceramics, straw hats (Piri), wood sculptures, filigree silver and gold jewels form part of the large range of local handicrafts.

Not to forget the objects or clothing made out of leather that are not very expensive.
Then if you want to have a "made to measure" pair of boots in the " Gaucho " custom, do not hesitate.

One can also find a unique craft industry that comes from the Indian communities which produce bows and arrows ,arcs, feather collars and other such original native trivia.

Paraguayans also manufacture their own musical instruments:
the Paraguayan Harp (36 cords, without pedals) extremely widespread and used in the typical musical groups accompanied by also made paraguayan guitars.

Music in Paraguay plays a significant role in all the festivals and religious demonstrations

Paraguayan made harps (which have nothing to do with the European versions) together with guitars provide the typical music for dancing at the numerous year round festivals
Guaranias, soft musics, romantic and sad in general, are played by a trio (conjunto) composed of a harpist and two guitarrists. The typical paraguayan orchestra is generally made up, in addition to the basic trio, of some violonists, a double bass player and an accordeonist.

Gastronomy

One should not miss whilst in Paraguay eating an "Asado", barbecued meats containing beef ribs and steaks as well as pieces of chicken, lamb and pork.
It is generally accompanied by wafers of cheese, salads and mandioc.

Here a sample of some local specialities:

One also finds in Paraguay the "mate", a traditional drink of the Gauchos which consists of an infusion of mate herbs which can be drunk hot (Cocido) or cold (Terere) by using a "bombilla" pipette in a special wood made container or horn.
